First Theme Park Visit — What Height Does Your Child Actually Need?
Planning your child's first theme park trip? We checked every ride at 38 UK parks to find the minimum height that makes each park worthwhile. Some work from 85cm, others need 120cm+.

When Is Your Child Tall Enough?
Every parent wonders: is my child tall enough to make a theme park visit worthwhile? Pay £50-70 per person, drive an hour or more, and discover your child can only ride three things — that's a bad day out.
We checked every ride at 38 UK theme parks to answer this properly. The answer depends entirely on which park you choose.
The Height Milestones
Theme park rides cluster around specific height thresholds. Here's what opens up at each milestone and which parks make the most of it.
No Restriction — Any Height
Several parks have rides with no minimum height at all. If your child can sit upright, they can ride.
Best parks at any height: | Park | No-restriction rides | Examples | |------|---------------------|----------| | Paultons Park | 23 | Peppa Pig World rides, Ghostly Manor | | Lightwater Valley | 24 | Eagles Claw, Ladybird, Tea Cups | | LEGOLAND Windsor | 10 | Duplo rides, boat rides | | Adventure Island | 8 | Kiddy rides, gentle attractions |
At this stage, Paultons Park and Lightwater Valley stand out. Both offer 20+ rides with zero height restriction — a genuine full day of riding for even the smallest visitors.
90cm — First Restrictions Pass
At 90cm (typically age 2-3), many "with adult" rides become available. This is the first meaningful unlock at parks that don't have no-restriction rides.
What opens at 90cm:
- Family dark rides (Gruffalo, Room on the Broom at Chessington)
- Gentle tracked rides (Octonauts at Alton Towers, Thomas rides at Drayton Manor)
- Small coasters (Flying Fish at Thorpe Park)
- Bumper cars with adult (various parks)
Parks where 90cm matters most: | Park | Rides at 90cm | Jump from 0 | |------|--------------|-------------| | Alton Towers | 8 | +6 rides (CBeebies Land opens) | | Chessington | 7 | +7 rides (first access) | | Thorpe Park | 7 | +7 rides (first access) | | Drayton Manor | 12 | +4 rides (Thomas Land expands) |
For Chessington and Thorpe Park, 90cm is the absolute minimum for any rides at all.
100cm — The Biggest Milestone
100cm (typically age 3-5) is the single biggest ride unlock point across UK theme parks. More new rides become available at this threshold than at any other height.
What opens at 100cm:
- Family coasters (LEGO Ninjago, Driving School at LEGOLAND)
- Bumper cars without adult
- Water rides
- Most "family" category rides
Parks with the biggest 100cm jump: | Park | NEW rides at 100cm | Total at 100cm | % of park | |------|-------------------|----------------|-----------| | LEGOLAND Windsor | +11 | 21 | 70% | | Lightwater Valley | +9 | 33 | 85% | | Crealy Adventure Park | +8 | 26 | 74% | | Chessington | +7 | 7 | 27% |
At 100cm, parks like Lightwater Valley (85%) and Paultons Park (86%) become nearly fully accessible. This is the height where a theme park day starts to feel unrestricted.

110cm — The Mid-Range
110cm (typically age 5-7) opens mid-tier rides at parks that have higher thresholds.
What opens at 110cm:
- Suspended coasters (Vampire at Chessington)
- Larger water rides (Tidal Wave at Thorpe Park)
- Spinning rides and drop towers at family parks
- Many Gulliver's parks rides
Parks where 110cm is the sweet spot: | Park | Rides at 110cm | % of park | |------|---------------|-----------| | Chessington | 16 | 62% | | Gulliver's World | 15 | 48% | | Thorpe Park | 11 | 46% |
Chessington transforms at 110cm — going from 8 rides to 16, including the Vampire coaster that defines the park.
120cm — Nearly Everything
120cm (typically age 7-10) opens almost all family and moderate-thrill rides. Only extreme coasters remain locked.
What opens at 120cm:
- Wooden coasters (Wicker Man at Alton Towers)
- Log flumes and rapids
- Most spinning thrill rides
- Mid-intensity coasters
Parks where 120cm completes the experience: | Park | Rides at 120cm | % of park | |------|---------------|-----------| | LEGOLAND Windsor | 30 | 100% | | Chessington | 23 | 88% | | Adventure Island | 27 | 96% |
LEGOLAND Windsor hits 100% access at just 120cm — every ride in the park is available.
130-140cm — Full Access
130cm unlocks most remaining rides. 140cm gives full access to every ride at every UK park, including Nemesis Reborn, The Smiler, Oblivion, and Hyperia.
Most children reach 140cm between ages 10-13.
Which Park for Your Child's First Visit?
If your child is under 90cm
Go to: Paultons Park (23 no-restriction rides) or Lightwater Valley (24 no-restriction rides)
These parks are designed so the youngest visitors can ride almost everything. No height stress, no turned-away-at-the-gate moments. This is the right first impression of a theme park.
If your child is 90-100cm
Go to: Drayton Manor (12 rides including Thomas Land) or LEGOLAND Windsor (10 rides in Duplo Valley and beyond)
Thomas Land at Drayton Manor is purpose-built for this age group. LEGOLAND's Duplo Valley is similarly targeted. Both give a full day without frustration.
If your child is 100-110cm
Go to: LEGOLAND Windsor (21 rides, 70% of park) or Paultons Park (30 rides, 86% of park)
This is the sweet spot for both parks. Your child can ride the vast majority of attractions. The day feels like a proper theme park visit.
If your child is 110-120cm
Go to: Chessington (16 rides plus zoo) or Alton Towers (9 rides including CBeebies Land)
Chessington's best rides (Vampire, Tomb Blaster, Scorpion Express) all open between 100-120cm. The zoo fills gaps between rides. Alton Towers has fewer rides at this height, but CBeebies Land plus Wicker Man (120cm) make it worthwhile.
If your child is 120cm+
Go to: Almost any park works. Alton Towers and Thorpe Park start delivering real value from 120cm, with the biggest jumps at 130-140cm.
Three Tips for the First Visit
1. Measure with park shoes on. Parks measure with shoes. A sturdy trainer adds 1-2cm over bare feet. Measure at home with the shoes they'll wear to the park. More measuring tips →
2. Target the right park, not the famous park. Alton Towers is the UK's most famous park, but a 95cm child can only ride 8 things there. The same child gets 24 rides at Paultons Park. Pick the park that matches your child's height.
3. Start early, leave early. Small children tire quickly. Arrive at opening, hit the target rides first, and plan to leave by mid-afternoon. A shorter day with lots of rides beats a long day with meltdowns.
