What Can My Child Ride? Theme Park Height Restrictions by Age
Parks set height limits, not age limits. See typical heights for ages 2 to 11 and what each one opens up at theme parks in the UK, France, Spain and the UAE.

The Short Answer
Theme parks almost never ask how old your child is. They ask how tall they are. So "what can a 4 year old ride?" really means "what can a child of about 103cm ride?", and the answer depends on the height, not the birthday.
As a rough guide, using the median height for each age:
- Age 2 (about 87cm): the no-restriction rides plus a handful of toddler rides with an adult.
- Age 3 (about 96cm): past the 90cm line, the most common first threshold. Most family rides open up.
- Ages 4 to 6 (about 103 to 116cm): almost everything except the real thrill rides.
- Age 7 (about 122cm): past 120cm, where proper roller coasters start and many rides can be ridden alone.
- Ages 9 to 11 (about 133 to 144cm): the 130cm and 140cm headline coasters.
In numbers, a child of 87cm can go on 572 of the 1146 UK rides we track. At 122cm that becomes 1050. The rest of this guide shows what happens at every age in between, in the UK, France, Spain and the UAE.
Typical Heights by Age
These figures are rounded medians for boys and girls together, taken from the WHO growth references and the UK-WHO growth charts. A median is the middle: half of all children that age are shorter and half are taller.
| Age | Typical height | Where that sits against ride limits |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | about 87cm | Just under 90cm, the most common first threshold |
| 3 | about 96cm | Over 90cm, still short of 100cm |
| 4 | about 103cm | Just past 100cm |
| 5 | about 110cm | Exactly on the 110cm line |
| 6 | about 116cm | Between 110 and 120cm, where few rides set a limit |
| 7 | about 122cm | Just past 120cm |
| 8 | about 128cm | Past 125cm, short of 130cm |
| 9 | about 133cm | Just past 130cm |
| 10 | about 138cm | Close to 140cm |
| 11 | about 144cm | Past 140cm |
Measure your own child. Healthy children are often several centimetres either side of these medians, and the spread widens as they get older. A tall 3 year old can be over 100cm, and a small 7 year old can still be under 120cm. Use the table to set expectations, then measure before you plan the day. Ride staff measure at the ride entrance, and the line on the measuring post is what counts. Some parks spell out how they measure: Sundown Adventureland, for example, says height checks on its driving school are done with shoes on.
What Each Age's Height Opens Up
The tables below count every ride a child of each median height can go on. They assume an adult rides along wherever a ride allows it. Rides whose operator doesn't publish a height are left out of the count, because we can't confirm them.

| 133cm | 332 | 89% |
| 138cm | 333 | 90% |

Two patterns stand out. First, the counts barely move between 110cm and 116cm, so a typical 6 year old can ride little more than a typical 5 year old. Second, the count can go down at the top. Many toddler rides have an upper height limit, so a tall 11 year old loses a few rides they could go on a year earlier.
Age by Age
Age 2 (about 87cm)
A typical 2 year old is just short of 90cm, the most common lowest threshold in UK parks. What they can ride is mostly the no-restriction attractions (carousels, train rides, play areas, boat rides) plus a few rides that start lower. At Paultons Park, the Tea Cup Ride takes riders from 75cm and Dino Chase, a family coaster, from 85cm, both with an adult.
The parks with the most to do at this height:
| # | Park | Rides at 87cm | All rides | Share | Region |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Watermouth Castle | 26 | 30 | 87% | Devon (North Devon) |
| 2 | Twinlakes Park | 26 | 47 | 55% | Leicestershire |
| 3 | Lightwater Valley | 25 | 40 | 63% | North Yorkshire |
| 4 | Paultons Park | 25 | 41 | 61% | Hampshire |
| 5 | Drayton Manor | 25 | 46 | 54% | Staffordshire |
| 6 | Sundown Adventureland | 21 | 22 | 95% | Nottinghamshire (Retford) |
In France, Disneyland Paris has 30 of its 38 attractions open at 87cm. In Spain, three rides at Isla Mágica in Seville open at 85cm: Topetazú, the children's bumper cars, which children ride on their own, and Las Llamas and Los Toneles with an adult. For more on parks for this age, see our first theme park visit guide.
Age 3 (about 96cm)
Crossing 90cm is the first big jump. In the UK the count rises from 572 rides at 87cm to 802 at 96cm. Small swing rides, the gentlest coasters and most farm and train rides open up here. Our ranking of UK theme parks under 100cm and the best UK rides under 100cm cover this stage in detail.
In Spain, Terra Mítica in Benidorm uses 92cm as its first step: Alucinakis, a children's train coaster, and the water rides Cataratas del Nilo and La Furia de Tritón all open at 92cm with an adult.
Age 4 (about 103cm)
A typical 4 year old has just passed 100cm, which opens bumper cars, family coasters and log flumes with an adult at most parks. At LEGOLAND Windsor a child of 103cm can go on 29 of 32 rides. Our 100cm milestone guide lists what unlocks park by park.
At PortAventura Park on the Costa Dorada, 100cm with an adult opens Templo del Fuego, Silver River Flume, Wild Buffalos, Crazy Barrels, Coco Piloto and Tami Tami.
Age 5 (about 110cm)
110cm is another common threshold. It matters most in the UAE, where many water slides and family rides start at 105 to 110cm. The UAE count jumps from 179 rides at 103cm to 258 at 110cm. At Legoland Dubai, a 110cm child can go on 26 of its 27 attractions. Spanish water parks have a 110cm step too: at Siam Park in Tenerife, Naga Racer, Mekong Rapids and Patong Rapids open at 110cm, while most of its other slides need 125cm.
| # | Park | Rides at 110cm | All rides | Share | Region |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jardin d'Acclimatation | 46 | 49 | 94% | Île-de-France (Paris) |
| 2 | Kingoland | 40 | 43 | 93% | Brittany (Morbihan) |
| 3 | Futuroscope | 39 | 47 | 83% | Nouvelle-Aquitaine (Vienne) |
| 4 | Parc Saint Paul | 37 | 39 | 95% | Hauts-de-France (Oise) |
| 5 | Ange Michel Parc | 37 | 42 | 88% | Normandy (Manche) |
| 6 | Odet Loisirs | 36 | 36 | 100% | Brittany (Finistère) |
Age 6 (about 116cm)
This is the flat stretch. Very few rides set their lowest limit between 111cm and 119cm, so the UK count at 116cm (969) is almost the same as at 110cm (968). A tall 6 year old may even start losing rides with an upper limit. LEGOLAND Windsor's L-Drivers is for children up to 110cm, and Legoland Dubai's Junior Driving School takes children from 95cm to 110cm. In Spain, the children's water areas at Western Water Park in Mallorca (La Ponderosa, Coyote Park and Daky Park) take children only up to 120cm.
If your 6 year old is close to 120cm, that's the number to watch. Our guide to being just under a height limit covers what genuinely helps.
Age 7 (about 122cm)
Past 120cm, the picture changes. The UK count rises to 1050, and these are bigger rides: Wicker Man, TH13TEEN and Spinball Whizzer at Alton Towers, Dragon's Fury and Mandrill Mayhem at Chessington, and Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain at Disneyland Paris. In Spain, Stampida, the wooden coaster at PortAventura Park, opens at 120cm, and 120cm is the usual minimum for the main slides at the Aqualand water parks. In UK and French parks, 120cm is also the most common height for riding alone on rides that let shorter children go with an adult. See our 120cm milestone guide for the full list, and Alton Towers vs Thorpe Park under 120cm if you're choosing between the two.
Age 8 (about 128cm)
A typical 8 year old gains only a few rides over a 7 year old: those set at 122cm, 125cm and 127cm, such as Drakon at Paultons Park (125cm with an adult). The bigger change at 8 is often an age rule rather than a height one (see below).
In Spain, 125cm is a common step at water parks: most of the big slides at Siam Park and several at Aqualandia in Benidorm need 125cm.
Ages 9 and 10 (about 133cm and 138cm)
130cm opens the next tier: Hyperia at Thorpe Park, ICON at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Toutatis and OzIris at Parc Astérix, Jaguar at Isla Mágica and Titánide at Terra Mítica, and Velociraptor at IMG Worlds of Adventure. Few rides sit between 131cm and 139cm, so a 10 year old at 138cm rides almost exactly what a 9 year old at 133cm rides. The Madrid parks are the exception: Superman Atracción de Acero at Parque Warner Madrid needs 132cm, Stunt Fall at the same park 137cm, and Abismo at Parque de Atracciones de Madrid 135cm, none of them with an adult option.
Age 11 (about 144cm)
140cm is the last common threshold. It covers The Smiler and Nemesis Reborn at Alton Towers, Stealth and The Swarm at Thorpe Park, Dragon Khan, Shambhala and Furius Baco at PortAventura Park, Red Force at Ferrari Land next door, and Formula Rossa at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. This is also where upper limits bite. At Brean Theme Park and Twinlakes Park, several children's rides take riders only up to 140cm. That's why Twinlakes drops from 47 rides at 138cm to 39 at 144cm. At Tibidabo in Barcelona, Alaska, Llits Elàstics, Mini Hurakan and Pony Rodeo don't admit anyone of 140cm or more.
Some Parks Add Age Rules on Top
Height decides whether a child can board. A few parks add an age rule as well, either a minimum age or an age below which an adult must ride. Examples from the rides we track:
- Paultons Park: on rides including Storm Chaser, Velociraptor and Sky Swinger, children under 120cm or under 8 must ride with a responsible adult. A tall 7 year old still needs you beside them.
- Adventure Island: Axis and Screature need 130cm and an age of 10 or over.
- GreenWood Family Park: MoonKarts are age-based: 8+ to ride alone, 5+ with an adult. The Giant Jumper has a maximum age of 12.
- Parc des Combes: Canad'R needs 1.40m, and riders under 14 must be accompanied. Boomerang needs 1m and an age of 4.
- Futuroscope: Les Yeux Grands Fermés, a walk through total darkness, is for ages 8 and over, with no height limit.
- Isla Mágica: Jaguar needs 130cm, and children under 8 can't ride. El Desfiladero, a play route open from 100cm with an adult, has a maximum age of 15.
- Parque de Atracciones de Madrid: La Máquina is open from 130cm with an adult, but the minimum age is 8, and children aged 8 to 10 need an adult.
- Siam Park: Tower of Power, a freefall slide, needs 149cm and an age of 12 or over.
- Legoland Dubai: Merlin's Challenge needs 105cm, plus an age of 6 to ride alone or 4 with an adult. The Driving School is for ages 5 to 13.
- IMG Worlds of Adventure: The Haunted Hotel has no height limit but is for ages 15 and over.
Several Spanish parks add a park-wide rule as well: children under a set age must come into the park with an adult. It's under 11 at Terra Mítica, under 13 at Tibidabo and Aqualandia, under 14 at Isla Mágica, Parque de Atracciones de Madrid and Parque Warner Beach, and under 16 at Aqualand Torremolinos and Aqualand Bahía de Cádiz.
Who counts as "an adult" varies too. At LEGOLAND Windsor the accompanying person must be 16 or over, and Dreamland Margate asks for a co-pilot over 16 on Hurricane Jets. On Muntanya Russa at Tibidabo, the companion must be an adult of at least 140cm. Check the park page before relying on an older sibling.
Putting It to Use
- Measure your child against a wall with a flat book on their head, or with a height chart (Amazon), in the shoes they'll wear on the day.
- Look up the park on our height guide, or enter every child's height in the planner to see which rides suit the whole family.
- Check the park page for upper limits and age rules, which the ride counts don't show.
FAQ
What rides can a 2 year old go on at a theme park?
At about 87cm, mostly no-restriction rides (carousels, trains, gentle boat rides and play areas) plus toddler rides starting at 75 to 85cm with an adult. Paultons Park and Drayton Manor are among the UK parks with the most to do at this height.
What rides can a 4 year old go on?
At about 103cm, a 4 year old can usually go on family coasters, bumper cars and log flumes with an adult. That's most rides at family parks, but not the 120cm+ thrill rides.
Can a 5 year old go on roller coasters?
Yes, family coasters. Many start at 85 to 100cm with an adult, such as Dino Chase and Cat-O-Pillar Coaster at Paultons Park. Bigger coasters usually need 120cm, which most children reach at around 7.
Is there a minimum age for rides in UK theme parks?
Usually not. Almost every ride uses height. A few add age rules, such as Adventure Island's 10+ rule on Axis and Screature, or Paultons Park's rule that under-8s ride with an adult.
Do Spanish theme parks have age rules as well as height limits?
Often, yes. Height still decides who can board, but some rides add an age: Jaguar at Isla Mágica is closed to children under 8, and Tower of Power at Siam Park needs an age of 12. Several Spanish parks also only let children under a set age in with an adult: for example, under 11 at Terra Mítica and under 16 at Aqualand Torremolinos.
Why can my child go on fewer rides now they're taller?
Some children's rides have an upper height limit, often 110cm, 120cm or 140cm. Once a child passes it, they're too tall for that ride even though they can now ride bigger ones.
Do theme parks measure children with shoes on?
Ride staff measure at the ride entrance, usually in normal footwear. Some parks state this outright. Measure at home in the same shoes, and don't rely on a centimetre's margin.
