When Height Becomes a Ceiling

Most of the time, height at a theme park works in one direction: the taller your child, the more they can ride. Then one day a ride host at the little teacups or the junior driving school shakes their head, and it's not because your child is too small.

Some rides built for young children have a maximum height as well as a minimum. Across the UK parks in our directory, 76 rides publish a maximum of 160cm or less. In France the figure is 101, in Spain 79, and in the UAE 9.

It catches out two kinds of family: parents of a tall preschooler, who find their child has outgrown a ride meant for their age, and families with an older sibling who wanted to ride alongside a little one. This guide covers both.

Why Junior Rides Have a Maximum Height

Junior rides are designed around small bodies. The seats, lap bars and vehicles are sized for young children, so a much taller child may not sit properly in the seat, or their knees and legs may not fit under the restraint the way the manufacturer intended. On spinning and bouncing rides, the fit of the seat and bar is a large part of what keeps a rider in place.

Play areas and soft play often set an upper limit for a different reason: to keep bigger, faster children apart from toddlers.

Either way, the ride host's measurement on the day is the one that counts, and arguing the case at the gate rarely goes anywhere.

Which Rides Have a Maximum Height in the UK

These are the UK rides in our data with a maximum of 140cm or less, lowest maximum first. The "Minimum height" column shows the lowest height to board, with an adult where that's allowed.

A few patterns stand out.

Driving schools. These are the classic "too tall" ride. At LEGOLAND Windsor, L-Drivers is for children from 90cm to 110cm, and the LEGO City Driving School takes over from 110cm to 150cm, with children driving on their own. Alton Towers runs Cuckoo Cars Driving School as a kids-only ride from 100cm up to 140cm, and Terence's Driving School at Drayton Manor has the same 100cm to 140cm range. The four Diggerland parks set 140cm as the top limit on Mini Landrovers, where children from 90cm to 100cm ride as passengers and from 100cm can drive, and 150cm on Crazy Trikes.

Junior roundabouts. Twinlakes Park and Brean Theme Park have several small-child rides that stop at 140cm, such as Dragon Flight, Pegasus Parade, Rainbow Cups and Ladybirds.

At a park with lots of these, crossing 140cm cuts both ways. Here is what a child can ride at Brean at each height. The count climbs up to 140cm, then the junior rides drop away once a child is taller than that:

Child's heightRides they can go onShare of 33 rides
120cm3194%
130cm3194%
140cm33100%
145cm2267%
150cm2267%

Play areas and soft play. Chessington's Dragon's Playhouse and Drayton Manor's Emily's Adventure Play both have upper limits (1.4m and 1.3m respectively), and the toddler section of Smugglers Cove at Codona's stops at 107cm.

Some limits are low. At Dreamland Margate, Little River is for children between 0.8m and 1.2m, and Austin Cars is for children under 1.2m. A tall four or five year old can easily be over that.

France

French parks publish maximum heights more often than UK parks, especially on children's rides at family parks such as Winnoland, Kingoland and Fraispertuis City. These are the French rides with a maximum of 120cm or less:

Many more stop at 140cm. At Le PAL, Desert Squadron is for children only and stops at 140cm, as does La Tour Mystère, a children's drop tower. Futuroscope has Budding Drivers, its children's driving school, from 105cm to 140cm. Several children's rides at OK Corral, Winnoland and Kingoland also cap at 140cm.

Spain

Spanish parks publish maximum heights mostly on two kinds of ride. The big coasters and drop towers often list a ceiling for tall adults, such as 195cm on Dragon Khan and Furius Baco at PortAventura Park and 205cm on Jaguar at Isla Mágica. The children's rides and the children's areas at water parks list much lower ones. These are the Spanish rides with a maximum of 120cm or less:

Many of these are children's areas at water parks. At Western Water Park in Mallorca, 120cm works in both directions: it's the minimum for the main slides and the maximum for the La Ponderosa, Coyote Park and Daky Park children's areas. Aqualand El Arenal sets the same 120cm maximum on its Kidzworld areas (Dragoland, MiniPark and Polynesia), and Baby Olas, the children's wave pool at Parque Warner Beach, stops at 110cm.

Many more stop at 140cm. At PortAventura Park, Kiddie Dragons, Buffalo Rodeo, Canoes and Armadillos have a 140cm maximum and no minimum, and Laberinto Blacksmith runs from 100cm to 140cm. Terra Mítica lists 92cm to 140cm on Akuatiti, Ayquesustus and Jabato. At Isla Mágica, Topetazú, the children's bumper cars, takes children from 85cm to 140cm, and Crisálida, Caimán Bailón and Los Náufragos stop at 150cm. The two Madrid parks each have a children's driving ride: TMNT - Licencia para Conducir at Parque de Atracciones de Madrid runs from 105cm to 140cm, and Escuela de Conducción Yabba-Dabba-Doo at Parque Warner Madrid from 105cm to 170cm.

Tibidabo in Barcelona words its limits differently: guests of 140cm or more are not admitted on Alaska, Llits Elàstics, Mini Hurakan and Pony Rodeo, nor guests of 150cm or more on TibiCity. That's why our data shows those maximums as 139cm and 149cm: a child of exactly 140cm is already too tall for the first four.

The UAE

In the UAE, maximum heights on children's rides are rarer, but they include some of the most popular:

Legoland Dubai splits its driving schools by size, as Windsor does: the Junior Driving School runs from 95cm to 110cm, and the Driving School from 110cm to 150cm. At Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Junior Grand Prix tops out at 140cm. At Aquaventure, Splasher's Play Area is for children under 1.2m.

What It Means for a Tall Preschooler

A tall child can reach a junior ride's maximum while they're still well within its target age. If your three or four year old is tall for their age, it's worth checking the junior rides before you promise them anything.

The upside is that a tall preschooler usually clears the minimum for the next ride up. At LEGOLAND Windsor and Legoland Dubai, a child who has outgrown the junior driving school at 110cm can move on to the bigger driving school from 110cm. The same height often opens family coasters too: our post on the rides that unlock at 100cm shows how much changes around that height.

Three practical points:

  • Measure in the shoes they'll wear on the day. Parks usually measure children with their shoes on, and shoes add height. If your child is just under a maximum barefoot, they may be over it in trainers.
  • "Maximum 120cm" and "under 1.2m" aren't always the same. Our data records the published figure, and the site treats a child exactly at the maximum as able to ride. Some parks word it as "under", so a child bang on the line may be turned away. Assume the limit is strict.
  • Don't count on looking shorter. Slouching or bent knees rarely get past a ride host.

Older Siblings and Riding Together

This is where families most often get caught out. An older brother or sister who's happy to keep a toddler company on a junior ride is usually too tall for it. A maximum height applies to everyone on board, and many junior rides are for children only: there is no adult or older-sibling option.

On rides where an adult can ride along, it isn't always clear from a park's published rules how the maximum applies to the grown-up. Our data doesn't record that, so ask at the ride entrance.

If you're visiting with children of very different heights, the useful question is what they can do together. This table ranks UK parks by rides that both a 95cm child and a 145cm child can go on, with an adult where allowed. Rides the 145cm child has outgrown drop out:

Rides with no height limit at all, such as carousels, trains, boat rides and many walk-through attractions, are where siblings of every height can ride together. For more on planning around different heights, see our guide to theme park height restrictions by age.

How the Site Shows Maximum Heights

Wherever a park publishes a maximum height, we record it with the ride.

  • On park pages, enter your child's height and every ride gets a verdict. A ride your child is over the maximum for shows "Too tall", and the summary at the top counts how many rides are too tall at that height.
  • On the ride sign, open a ride in the list and you'll see a "You must be this tall" sign. Where the ride has a maximum, the sign shows a Maximum line alongside the minimum, with your child's height marked, so you can see at a glance whether they sit between the two.
  • In the ride list, the "Height needed" column shows the maximum under the minimum (for example "max 140cm").
  • In the planner and every count on the site, rides a child has outgrown are left out. That's why a taller child can sometimes have a lower count at a family park than a shorter one.

You can add more than one child on a park page. Each ride then shows a verdict for each child, and you can see how many rides everyone can go on together.

Frequently asked questions

Can a child be too tall for a ride?

Yes. Some children's rides, driving schools and play areas set a maximum height, because the seats and restraints are sized for small children. If your child is over it, they won't be allowed on, even if they're the right age.

What is the most common maximum height on kids' rides?

In our data, 140cm is by far the most common upper limit on children's rides, followed by 150cm and 120cm. Driving schools often split by height, with a junior version up to about 110cm and a bigger one beyond it, as at LEGOLAND Windsor and Legoland Dubai.

Can an older sibling ride a toddler ride with a younger child?

Usually not if they're over the maximum, which applies to everyone on board. Many junior rides are children only. Check each ride's limits on the park page, and ask at the entrance if you're unsure whether an accompanying adult is exempt.

Do theme parks measure maximum heights with shoes on?

Children are usually measured as they are, in their shoes. Measure your child at home in the shoes they'll wear on the day, so you know whether they're near a maximum as well as a minimum.

Why does my taller child have fewer rides at some parks?

Because rides they've outgrown are no longer counted. At parks with lots of junior rides capped at 120cm or 140cm, a taller child can lose several rides as they gain the bigger ones. Enter both heights on a park page to see exactly which rides are affected.
