Water Rides at a Glance

Water rides are often the first "big" ride a child does with the family, and they're also the rides parents plan around most: who sits where, who gets soaked, and whether there's a dry top in the bag.

Height rules vary a lot by kind of ride. As a rough guide from our data:

  • Gentle boat rides and children's rivers often have no height limit, or take small children with an adult.
  • Log flumes in UK parks usually start somewhere between 90cm and 100cm with an adult, and need more to ride alone.
  • River rapids tend to start a little higher. At Alton Towers, Congo River Rapids is from 110cm with an adult, and Storm Surge, a spinning raft ride at Thorpe Park, is the same.
  • Big plunge rides and water park slides are where 120cm and above comes in.
  • Splash play areas are usually open to the smallest children, sometimes with an upper limit to keep older children out.

A ride counts below when your child can board it alone or with an adult riding alongside. The tables count rides our data lists as water rides, water slides, wave pools or lazy rivers. Splash pads that parks list as play areas aren't in those tables, so we cover them separately.

UK Water Rides for Small Children

These UK parks have the most water rides open to a 90cm child:

8M&D's Scotland's Theme Park11100%North Lanarkshire
9Paultons Park11100%Hampshire

The numbers are small because UK theme parks usually have only one to three water rides each. Twinlakes Park is the exception, with a whole run of them, including the indoor Davey Jones Barrel Run (from 90cm with an adult) and the Susanoo Splash Play water park, which is booked in one-hour slots.

Here is every UK water ride a child can board at 90cm or less, with an adult where allowed:

A dash in the "With an adult" column means there's no lower height with an adult. A dash in "Alone" means the park doesn't publish a solo height, so your child always rides with a grown-up.

Some favourites from the list: Buffalo Falls at Paultons Park is a log flume from 90cm, and children under 7 must ride with a responsible adult. Rugrats Lost River at Blackpool Pleasure Beach takes any height with an adult. At Chessington, River Rafts is a mini flume from 90cm with an adult.

UK Water Rides at 120cm

By 120cm most UK water rides are open, and the big ones start too:

At 120cm a child can ride Tidal Wave at Thorpe Park, Tiger Rock at Chessington (with an adult until 130cm) and the two Tidal Wave slides at Adventure Island. A few need more: Valhalla at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Stormforce 10 at Drayton Manor both need 130cm.

Splash Play Areas

Splash pads and water play areas are often the best water attractions for toddlers, but parks tend to list them as play areas rather than rides. Some in our data:

  • Paultons Park: Muddy Puddles in Peppa Pig World has no height restriction (bring swimwear). Splash Lagoon is from 90cm, and children under 8 must be with a responsible adult.
  • Drayton Manor: Thomas & Percy's Submarine Splash in Thomas Land is from 0.9m, with an adult under 1.2m.
  • Crealy Adventure Park: Blue Lagoon is an indoor water play area.
  • Pleasurewood Hills: Water Fun Factory is from 90cm with an adult.
  • Twinlakes Park: Susanoo Splash Play must be supervised by an adult over 16.

How Wet Will You Get?

Our data doesn't measure wetness, so treat this as general guidance plus what each ride's own description says.

  • Gentle boat rides and children's rivers usually leave you dry or lightly splashed. Our notes for Splash Falls at Lightwater Valley call it a "gentle water ride with small splash".
  • Log flumes vary. Most of the water arrives at the final drop, and some flumes are much wetter than others. Wild River at Brighton Palace Pier "guarantees to get riders wet", and adults sit behind children.
  • River rapids are unpredictable. Each round boat spins, so who gets the wave is down to luck. Our listing for River Rapids at Drayton Manor says simply: "You will get soaked!"
  • Splash battles, where boats have water cannons, get everyone wet, sometimes including people watching nearby. For Battle Galleons at Alton Towers, expect to get wet.
  • Big plunge rides such as Tidal Wave at Thorpe Park send up a huge wave at the bottom. Our listing puts it bluntly: "Get absolutely soaked!"

If a small child hates getting water in their face, start with a gentle river or a junior flume before a rapids ride, and let them watch one go round first.

Ponchos, Spare Clothes and Other Tips

  • Pack a full change of clothes for each child, including socks and underwear, in a bag you can leave in a locker or the car. A wet bag (Amazon) keeps soaked clothes away from dry ones. Wet jeans make for a long afternoon.
  • A cheap poncho (Amazon) helps on log flumes. It does less on rapids, where water comes in from the sides and the floor.
  • Think about shoes. Wet trainers stay wet all day. Some families bring sandals or water shoes (Amazon) for the water rides. Remember that parks usually measure children in their shoes, so if your child is close to a limit, know their height in each pair.
  • Plan the order. Do the wettest rides when it's warm, or just before you'd change anyway, rather than first thing on a cool morning.
  • Expect weather closures. Water rides at UK parks are often seasonal and can close in cold weather, so check with the park on the day.
  • Bring a quick-dry towel (Amazon) for car seats if you're driving home.

How the Site Marks Water Rides

On every park page, the ride list marks water rides with their own water icon and the type label "Water". You can filter the list by type to see only those.

Rides that aren't listed as water rides but where the park says you'll get splashed carry a "You'll get wet" tag. That picks up splash pads listed as play areas, such as Muddy Puddles at Paultons, and boat rides like Viking Boats at Paultons, which our listing describes as a "splashy water ride".

Enter your child's height on a park page and every water ride gets a verdict along with everything else. Our guide to with-adult and alone heights explains the two columns.

France

French parks are well stocked with water rides, and some have a water park inside the park.

Walygator Sud-Ouest has the most water rides in our French data, because its water park sits inside the theme park. Its wave pool and children's play pool are open to small children with an adult, but most of its slides start at 1m10 or 1m20. Poseidon and Vertigo need 1m40. At Cobac Parc, L'Aqua Kids Park is for children up to 120cm, while Le Grand Frisson and Le Black Hole need 1m40, and riders go alone.

For small children, look at junior flumes. Le Baby Flum at Didiland takes children from 70cm with an adult. Hydrolix at Parc Astérix is from 80cm with an adult. Read our guide to French theme parks with young children for the full picture.

Spanish Water Parks

Spain has a long list of water parks in our directory, including Siam Park and Aqualand Costa Adeje in Tenerife, Aqualand Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, Aqualand Torremolinos and Aqualand Bahía de Cádiz in Andalusia, Aqualand El Arenal and Western Water Park in Mallorca, Aqualandia in Benidorm, Caribe Aquatic Park at PortAventura World and Parque Warner Beach near Madrid. Here's how the Spanish parks compare for a 100cm child:

A few things are worth knowing:

  • 120cm is the usual slide height. The main slides at the Aqualand parks and Western Water Park mostly start at 120cm. At Siam Park, most slides need 125cm, Naga Racer, Mekong Rapids and Patong Rapids 110cm, and Tower of Power 149cm plus an age of 12.
  • Some slides take smaller children with an adult. At Aqualand Maspalomas, Banzai, Misol-ha and Hurakan open at 100cm with an adult (alone from 120cm), and Río del Pirata, the lazy river, takes any height with an adult. At Parque Warner Beach, Río Loco is from 90cm with an adult, and Aquaman from 107cm with an adult (alone from 122cm). At Caribe Aquatic Park, Barracudas and El Torrente take children of any height with an adult, and alone from 100cm.
  • Children's areas often have a maximum height. La Ponderosa, Coyote Park and Daky Park at Western Water Park and the Kidzworld areas at Aqualand El Arenal stop at 120cm, and Family Adventure Land and Children's Paradise at Aqualand Bahía de Cádiz at 140cm. Our guide to maximum height limits covers rides like these.
  • Weight limits are often per rider. Siam Park sets 120kg per person on most slides, and 110kg on a single float at Jungle Snakes and The Giant. Aqualand El Arenal lists 100kg on Crazy Race, Báalam and Anaconda and 120kg on its single floats. Parque Warner Beach lists 114kg per person on Aquaman and Black Manta and 133kg on most of its other slides, and Caribe Aquatic Park 136kg on El Tifón and Mambo Limbo. Double and group floats usually carry a total for the whole float instead. Western Water Park and Aqualand Maspalomas publish no weight limits.
  • Some parks have swimming rules. Aqualandia says you need to be able to swim to use its attractions, and children who can't swim go with an adult. At Caribe Aquatic Park, riders on Bahía Pirata must be able to swim, and a life jacket is compulsory from 120cm to 140cm. At Siam Park, riders under 110cm wear a life jacket on Mai Thai River, the lazy river; life jackets are included with the ticket.

Spain's theme parks have water rides too. At Terra Mítica, Cataratas del Nilo is from 92cm with an adult (alone from 120cm). At Isla Mágica, Rápidos del Orinoco opens at 95cm, and children under 10 need an adult. At PortAventura Park, Angkor takes any height with an adult (alone from 130cm), and Silver River Flume is from 100cm with an adult (alone from 140cm).

UAE Water Parks

The UAE is where water parks dominate. Yas Waterworld, Aquaventure, Wild Wadi, Legoland Water Park Dubai and Dreamland Aqua Park all have long lists of slides. Here's how they compare for a 100cm child:

A few things are worth knowing:

  • Yas Waterworld has a row of kids' slides from 90cm, including Dawwama Junior and Sebag Junior, plus Yadi Yas, a beach-style wave pool. Tot's Playground is a shallow water play area with no height restriction.
  • Aquaventure has Splasher's Play Area for children from 100cm up to 1.2m, and many of its tower slides, including Leap of Faith, need 120cm. Its wave pool and lazy river need life jackets for children under 1.2m.
  • Wild Wadi opens most of its slides at 110cm. Life jackets are needed in Breakers Bay and on Juha's Journey for children under 1.1m.
  • Legoland Water Park Dubai opens most slides at 102cm or 107cm, and DUPLO Splash Safari, a toddler water playground with mini slides, is from 91cm.
  • Al Montazah Pearls Kingdom doesn't publish heights for its slides, so they show "Height not listed" and aren't counted as rideable in the tables above.

Water park slides often set a weight limit as well as a height, and sometimes a swimming requirement. Check the sign at the top of each slide. Our Dubai and Abu Dhabi guide covers the theme parks too.

Frequently asked questions

What height do you need to go on a log flume?

It varies by ride. In UK parks, most log flumes in our data take children from 90cm to 100cm with an adult, and usually need 110cm or more to ride alone. Big plunge rides such as Tidal Wave at Thorpe Park need 120cm.

Can toddlers go on water rides?

Yes, some. Gentle boat rides and children's rivers often have no height limit or take small children with an adult, and splash play areas are usually open to toddlers. Paultons Park's Muddy Puddles and Yas Waterworld's Tot's Playground have no height restriction.

How wet do you get on river rapids?

Often very wet, and it's down to luck where the water lands. Wear clothes that dry quickly, and keep a change of clothes for each child in a locker or the car.

Do you need swimwear for theme park water rides?

Not usually for log flumes, rapids or boat rides, where people ride in normal clothes. You'll want swimwear for splash pads and water parks, such as Muddy Puddles at Paultons.

What height do you need for water slides in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

It depends on the slide. Yas Waterworld has kids' slides from 90cm, Legoland Water Park Dubai opens most slides at around 102cm to 107cm, and Wild Wadi most at 110cm. The big drop slides at Aquaventure and Yas Waterworld need 120cm.

What height and weight limits do Spanish water parks have?

It depends on the park and the slide. The main slides at the Aqualand parks and Western Water Park mostly need 120cm, and most of Siam Park's need 125cm. Many slides also set a weight limit per rider, often 120kg, and some lower: 100kg on Crazy Race, Báalam and Anaconda at Aqualand El Arenal, and 110kg on a single float at Jungle Snakes and The Giant at Siam Park.

Do I need a life jacket for my child at a water park?

Sometimes. Aquaventure needs life jackets for children under 1.2m in its wave pool and lazy river, and Wild Wadi for under 1.1m in Breakers Bay and on Juha's Journey. Water parks usually provide them, but ask on arrival.
